Historical Data on the General
Store in Anderson's Corners Copake, New York
In 1939 the general store burned and it was
not rebuilt. The part of this structure that contained this
house was saved. (The foundation stones on the west side
of the cellar show signs of the smoke.)
Mr. Finkle died in 1940 and his widow and daughter continued
living in this home. At the wife's death in 1949 the deed
was conveyed to the daughter and she sold this property to
Harold and Mae Coons Coleman in 1950. They added a one story
addition where the larger general store had stood and his became
the local "soda pop" store which catered to the local residents
and the summer campers attending the 6 children's camps located
within a mile of the center of this community.
At the intersection of Cross Street and Route 7 was located the
Flamingo Inn, owned and operated by Pat Angella, on Upper Rhoda
Lake. There was a long structure to the west of the main
hotel which was known as a dancehall. On many 1940-50's
summer nights the roads were filled with young camp counselors
and locals, music, cars and fun. Swimming, fishing,
picnicking and boat rentals were available.
After the death of Harold in 1960, Mae (my husband Allan's first
cousin) continued to occupy the house but the store was closed.
In 1971 she transferred the property to her daughter and
son-in-law, Patricia and Daniel Thomas.
The Thomas' sold the house to us in 1978. We raised 3
daughters here. Allan had a small business on the premises
and it has been a wonderful house and home for us.
Entertaining in this home is a delight.
